Hing is a well-known natural flavoring agent and a magical remedy for digestive issues.It is a widely used spice in Indian cuisines. But still, there is dislike for it due to its pungent smell and strong taste.
Now if we talk about the substitute of Hing- Onion and Garlic are the ones with similar remedial properties. Along with this these also add taste to dishes similar to hing.
1-Garlic
- Similarly, as hing it is widely known for its antibacterial and anti-viral properties.
- It also gives relief from stomach and gut problems and helps in digestion.
- It strengthens the immune system and improves bone health.
HOW TO USE?
- You can use fresh garlic in your dishes after roasting it in a pan. But if it is not available then you can use garlic powder or garlic paste instead.
- You can also use garlic sauteed in desi ghee to get similar flavor as of hing.
2-Onion

1-Fennel seeds
Both fennel and asafoetida belong to the Umbelliferae plant family so both share similar properties and tastes hence Fennel seeds can be one substitute for it.

2-Celery seeds
It has a unique aroma similar to hing.

3-Chives
Often used for salads these are extremely flavourful and full of antioxidants.

MAGIC SUBSTITUTE!
Now, if you are worried about the pungent smell and strong taste of hing but want all its benefits then there are some more flexible approaches(jugaadu substitutes)-
1-Adding Hing to hot oil or other fats reduces its pungent smell and taste to an extent.
2-Mixing Hing with Cumin(jeera) reduces the taste of hing in dishes, that’s why it is advisable to not keep Hing with jeera in the same box as it reduces its strength.
3-Add Onion and garlic powder in equal proportions, add some salt then mix them and keep in an airtight container.
Now, simply add it to your dishes to get a similar taste as of hing.
